Bowie was also a queer icon who had a massive influence on tons of people beyond his tunes. I'm not even hugely familiar with all his music (though I like a lot of it), but the outpouring of sentiment when he passed, how much he meant to people in their own attempts to be authentic selves, or play with identity, was extremely moving.

But the number of people who seem to think that Prince playing some reheated Hendrix A minor pentatonic bullshit over My Guitar Gently Weeps is the greatest feat of musicianship ever witnessed, and calling him the greatest multi-instrumentalist in pop history while guys like Stevie Wonder are still kicking, I find it quite baffling.
Yeah, that same solo could have conceivably been played by any blueshammer rando and no one would give a shit. But Prince was a 'good entertainer', no doubt.
If Prince isn’t on the short list for “greatest multi-instrumentalist in pop history” along with Stevie Wonder … well, I mean, who else is even on that list?

Since the too-easy answer to the question of “things has The Collective decided are cultural touchstones but are actually bullshit” is The Doors, I’ll instead indict There Will Be Blood in general, and Daniel Day Lewis’s performance therein in particular. “I drink your milkshake” is as risible as any line reading by Tommy Wiseau in The Room, but one of those performances is a cultural punchline and the other won its performer the Academy Award for best actor.

Far too easy, to the point of being untrue. How many people do you know actually love The Doors? Among record nerds they're as universally panned as Nickelback (play one and then the other if you want some contrast for insufferable). Granted, Morrison was an irredeemably pretentious ass hat, but musically they were pretty cool. Also a major influence on bands like Joy Division. It is very in style to hate the Doors.

Man...
You are lucky if folks can even successfully tell you who the guy is.
Can you actually be overrated under those circumstances?
It's fun watching him plod through four note riffs as the second guitar in The Cure tho. Not a fan of his shred-wank, but I do enjoy that Bowie track where he had to play the solo on one string at a time - DB giving him the nod to move from the E to A, D, G, etc.

I love The Doors! Why does everyone here hate them? I genuinely do not understand. Morrison’s lyrics are fabulous. You are all nuts : /

From the old forum:

etch wrote: yeah the poetry is dumb, and Morrison sounds like he was an obnoxious human being, but he was in his early twenties when he wrote most of that stuff, so I cut him some slack.

jimmy spako wrote:ripping off rimbaud, who had renounced poetry by that age. no need for slack-cutting. his lyrics just suck.

reminds me of being in high school & partying at a good friend's older brother's shack. the doors were the shack soundtrack. said friend's older brother had taken to writing morrison inspired poetry. i remember one that was so epiphanic that it had to be tacked to the wall. the last lines read:

i have lived before:

CRAP

& now i have to go. the blue bus is calling me.
