Been into punk rock for 40 years, yet I still don't know what hardcore means exactly.
I'll say Bad Brains
Re: Top 5 80's Hardcore Bands
22Good question! My “purist” definition is like: 200+ bpm (except for half-time breakdown parts and intentionally dirge-y songs), relentlessly negative, nihilistic lyrics, screamed vocals, no solos longer that 4 bars, made roughly between 1981 and 1984. But there are a lot of loopholes, huh? Black Flag wasn’t really that fast a band, Jello was a pretty melodic singer, as was HR etc etc.RyanZ wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 10:39 am Been into punk rock for 40 years, yet I still don't know what hardcore means exactly.

Another way to think, play classic punk: Ramones, Sex Pistols, then this.
Clearly doing a different thing. There's some weird harmonic theory stuff in some of it, but it's played mostly by teens who are unintentionally peculiar in some chord choices.
Re: Top 5 80's Hardcore Bands
24To me Black Flag was more of an extension of punk 1.0 than 'hardcore': still slightly rooted in that Chuck Berry guitar thing like the Pistols and Ramones. They then went straight to metal and avant garde without ever adopting the gallop/oompah thing. ("Swinging Man" kind of tries but just sounds.. odd)

25I always get stuck on "Do I have to rule this out if it is after a certain point in time?..." when it comes to Hardcore.RyanZ wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 10:39 am Been into punk rock for 40 years, yet I still don't know what hardcore means exactly.

Re: Top 5 80's Hardcore Bands
26Realised I forgot these crucial players-
Circle jerks - group sex - the most energetic and wild 15 minute album you’ll ever find. They shoulda hung it up after they - could never be topped
Germs - GI - great for all the standard reasons, but ruined by that dogshit final song
Bad Brains - tape - I guess the reggae stuff makes me think of as not hardcore , but of course it all slays…

28Yeah, they're viewed as the original "LA Hardcore."boilermaker wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 8:35 amAre Germs considered hard core?Iancee wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 5:58 am Realised I forgot these crucial players-

We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.
Re: Top 5 80's Hardcore Bands
29I would put the Germs and X in the non-hardcore category. They are more old school punk to my earsKrev wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 9:22 amYeah, they're viewed as the original "LA Hardcore."boilermaker wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 8:35 amAre Germs considered hard core?Iancee wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 5:58 am Realised I forgot these crucial players-

Re: Top 5 80's Hardcore Bands
30Yeah. I think the difference is some of those bands, while 'harder' than the Sex Pistols, still have some rock'nroll backbeat and swagger, and hardcore stripped that stuff away. (for better or worse)
