42A couple of years ago, just before Christmas, I went to the library to check out some books to read while I was with family for the holidays. I think the books were:losthighway wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 10:25 pmAmen. Every time I walk out of my local library with books for my kids, a novel for myself and a DVD of a film I wanted to see and the cool ass, friendly security guard guy gives me a wave. The people at the desk are these awesome dorks who just love knowing shit and helping people find things. That's what I pay my fucking taxes for!Wood Goblin wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 7:46 pmGood answer!penningtron wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 7:05 pm Libraries, especially checking out music from the library.
- the Road, Cormac McCarthy
- Collected short fiction of Flannery O'Connor
- Johnny Got His Gun, Dalton Trumbo
- In Cold Blood, Truman Capote
- The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers
The bespectacled young woman behind the counter spread the books out across the counter, so that all of the titles were facing me like an accusation, peered over her glasses and said to me "A little light holiday reading, then?"
Library workers are the nation's conscience, honestly.

44And you can get things from other branches so easily, and quickly, and wait lists and... people took the inherent organization and built on it without making it stupid. To libraries!penningtron wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 7:05 pm Libraries, especially checking out music from the library.
Re: Massively Underrated Stuff.
46I'll vouch for this. Also, I love the cover.

47Genuinely think the second 8 Rush albums are better than the first 8.
Re: Massively Underrated Stuff.
48The only Rush albums I still own and listen to are Signals and Grace Under Pressure.
Re: Massively Underrated Stuff.
49I like this one, too.
"First eight" is probably too sharp of a cutoff. In fact, I would agree that there is a case that the second eight are more underrated than the first eight.
Anyway, I like Rush.

50At some point in the early/mid aughts I was able to come out of the closet as a Rush fan. It was very liberating no longer having to pretend I came out of the womb listening to velvet underground and the stooges or whatever nonsense people do.
