I have them always in every mix, and I put them on the main bus. I barely ever change the settings, if at all. I got a good piece of advice on how to use them, which is to get the EQ you want before mixing and gain staging. Then, mix into them. Sometimes I put them on a kick drum or a bass. There's that awesome kick drum trick that is always nice to have in your back pocket.

22Relevant to this post, but Kiive just came out with three plugins in collaboration with Audioscape. They look really fucking good. I love Kiive, I have a ton of their plugins.

they're releasing their version of a Melcor AM-27 preamp, which I guess is a predecessor to the API stuff.
If it’s any good $799 new for two channels in a 19” rack is a great price.
I know everybody here is preamp agnostic, but I’ve been wanting to get a bunch of channels of the same preamp and just use that for everything until I run out, sorta console style, like my favorite records were made.
Never tried API or anything similar but I would like to. Definitely a fan of Audioscape stuff, though.

26I always feel like they make everything overhyped, and the cool cut boost functionality of them is the exact sound of overhyped low end that I think has ruined modern mix sounds. The high end is to me problematic for the same reason. Makes everything sound like KPop or Ultra Modern Punch-Record Shred Robot Metal to me. I also feel like I can get everything they do form any modern EQ plug like a Fab Filter or even a Reaper EQ, plus I get a usable mid control. I think maybe they thing people really loved about the vintage units was the artifacts from the makeup gain stage. They were just drawn to the saturation. Push any eq into cool saturation and it can be just as good. But I'm a weirdo and in the minority when it comes to Pultec/clones. I also feel like a LA2A is a pretty meh experience, and I get shade for it all the time. 27I like them and i definitely hate that sound you’re talking about. I wonder how many plugins are going to make them sound like that?
I almost always use their Pultec stuff on individual elements like bass, acoustic guitar, vocals. The MEQ is a secret weapon on getting an upright sound out of electric bass. As far as the EQPs go - I had one on a vocal or a bass or something and was going to move it to something else. I repatched and then played back the element I had just removed it from w/o the eq and it made me sad. I wish I had that reaction more often since it would make recording way easier.
Their LA2A I wish I had more of for the same instruments. When I can be careful enough with the gain staging to just record with it to where the needle is just moving, I’ll do that, but its not always possible. It can make di bass bearable and acoustic guitar sound like a Sound Techniques record.
I talk about vintage stuff a lot, but I just think that older records tend to sound better. Not doing trying to do a throwback thing with this stuff, and a lot of times ppl get way goofy when they start reaching for that sort of thing.

29If it's a tie breaker, the audioscape stuff is all through hole, which for the price is kind of crazy. I also love the look of the boards, I see some large traces, leading me to want to think the board design is great (or true to original). 30I'm pretty sure the iron age stuff is all through hole as well (aside from the DOAs) - and if one of those fail it's probably a lot easier to swap out a $20 replacement than it would be to troubleshoot a jungle of vertical mount resistors.

The Warm WA-412 is another option, they seem to be the one Warm product that's generally agreed to be bang on, and consequently rarely comes up used. AFAIK the DOAs are socketed on all of these options so you could try mixing and matching.
