I would definitely do a $100 for that one. I also have a closet of broken Traynor TS amps, but they’re a lot of fun.

Funnily enough he went to turn it on for a once over before we met and the thing is broken... [/facepalm]

Hopefully he tunes it up and gets back.

So I ended up buying a Boxidizer yesterday after learning that they’re being discontinued once current stock sells out. RIP all fallen soldiers. Also RIP my pedal budget for the rest of the year.

That noise was probably just someone not realizing how to lock the reverb tank springs, and also maybe the reason when they sold them to Garth that the reverb no longer worked.

Maybe all the reverb locks were broken on mine, but even pressing that weird latch in never seemed to quell the rattle.

I can also say the same thing for Chris from Maple Stave’s V4, which rattles like a motherfucker even when locked.

V4/V4B is my favorite overall amp. I've had four of them, I think, plus a VT22 and an SVT. I still have one V4 and a V4B which I use interchangeably.

If they are not kept up and the bias drifts too much, you can wear out parts prematurely, esp. the tubes.

They are not hard to tune up, but repairing them isn't as easy as working on a Fender or something. Unusual tone stack, very high voltages internally etc.

If you don't get someone who knows how to deal with them, I can see how they could be a problem. Mine are from the 70s, initially gone through by a great tech in suburban Seattle (Rick Erickson) in the 90s, and they've been great basically the whole time. I've had one fail twice in the last eight years or so due to bad power tubes (which is unfortunately a lot more common now).

I had little external bias points and pots put in out here in Chicago, and keeping them in line is a breeze.

I would not tour with an old Ampeg w/o a flight case. I've never taken a V4 on the road w/o a case.

My first Ampeg was an SVT that used to break more than I would like until I got a flight case, at which point it miraculously stopped breaking ever.

I took out the reverbs. Not a strong suit, unlike with old Fenders.

Lately I've gone to the dark side live and I use an Aguilar Tone Hammer 700 with (critically) an Origin Effects fake SVT pedal. It's very close to to an SVT-type sound and the whole thing weighs like 9lbs in a Pelican.

What I believe is a essentially a silverface ampeg SVT for 1100 serviced (apparently). I have tube AIMS VTB that is my main bass amp, a GK800 and three 400s.
There's no technical reason I "need" this, but I've accepted my life appointment as a bass player now, and feel like I should probably have an SVT for hoots.

I recorded SVTs on two out of three projects this summer and I can't think of an easier amp to get a great bass tone out of (tied with a Mesa 400). Damned heavy though but you already knew that.

yup, I did the same. I could replace all my other amps with this one, but I know myself and I just won't sell any of them.

I love SVTs. I owned a 70s SVT for a short time but couldn’t afford to keep it around because I was a piece of shit. I listed it online and some guy from Germany sent someone over from Houston to just pick it up from me.

I know people are really iffy about tube vs solid state bass amps or just don’t care enough to deal with the hassle, but I’ve played a lot of different amps side by side and the difference was never subtle to me.

An SVT may not technically make you a better player, but sure kicks one’s confidence up a notch.
