Funny you mention this. I just listened to Jon Stewart’s podcast today with a presidential historian guest and they came to the same conclusions. Plus, a six week election cycle max.
I agree, but again... money matters. Every year, we break records for money spent on elections. Why would those who profit off of elections want that to go away?

Seriously, we throw away nearly--if not fully--$1b on election spending during presidential election years, because it's become a 2 year process. We could spend that money elsewhere, but we decide to burn it.

Time was also mentioned as a big negative factor. Time = money therefore it incentivises the appalling amount of money the races cycle through… plus two years of endless arguments has created the extreme polarisation, particularly from the right.
