Debut, Di'Anno has the better voice for heavy metal (I believe former FM BER described it as "swarthy") and the better songs are on the debut versus Killers. I like the scrappy production too, the later over-the-top dramatic stuff is borderline power metal.
I do like NOTB and probably owe Piece of Mind a re-listen. But yeah, early Maiden is a superlative metal band, shame Di'Anno couldn't keep it together.

Maybe a bit tricky after mainlining all five one after the other, but I think Piece of Mind was my favourite, by a hair from the debut.

23Oh I've done this many times already. It's the only Maiden I know, as it was a staple on the drives to Donnington way back when.seby wrote: Thu Aug 29, 2024 3:18 amOkay man trust me here - take Life After Death a whirlA_Man_Who_Tries wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 6:58 am Man alive, that was fun. It'll definitely get a rehearing though, and I'll likely give the next few after Powerslave a whirl too.

25Powerslave! But my favorite single song of their catalog is The Trooper. And it isn’t close.
Re: Best Iron Maiden Record
26Brett Ralph posted this on the Surface Noise FB page, and I thought I’d put it here. RIP Paul Di’Anno.
“Although it was drummer Clive Burr's doing as much as Di'Anno's, no band I know of married metal's majesty to punk attack and attitude more convincingly than Iron Maiden. For this reason, Maiden circa 1979-1982 is my favorite metal ever, and Paul Di'Anno remains among my very favorite hard rock singers--a swarthy, sweaty man's man where preening peacocks and poodle do's were legion. He's the Charlie Harper of heavy metal, if you ask me, a hail fellow well met whose gruff, gritty bellow I'll take over a whole choir of operatic banshees. Not once did I talk with the late great Tony Bailey without one of us bringing up Di'Anno and the singular music he'd made with Iron Maiden. It's a sad, sad day for metal muthas. Always remember tomorrow! ”

27They did a ton of great shit with Bruce, but "Murders in the Rue Morgue" remains my favorite. Paul was definitely one of metal's greatest front men. Up the irons!
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.
