Okay hit me. Betty is hands down my favourite 90s rock album. It was a total revelation for me when I discovered it.
Betty is my favorite Helmet record, hands down. Those first 5 tracks are a beginners guide to taco riffing. The opening track probably has one of my favorite riffs ever, and it made me explore some of the dropped D stuff that I have done in my music. The production is not what I would love it to be, would love to hear how those drums would sound if Steve got his hands on it, but we'll never know.
This recent interview with Stanier is really interesting. He talks about the drum recording and mixing. The kick is triggering an 808 or something, it’s in there somewhere. I love the drums on Betty, but Steve was a master at getting huge drums. In the Meantime is the closest we get to that.
The solo on Wilma’s Rainbow is my favourite period. It’s a perfect example of his wall of noise with flutters of traditional soloing tropes. To me it sounds like he’s wrestling the guitar, not playing it. It feels barely under control, like a rodeo ride. From memory there some Eventide Harmonizer randomly triggering off the notes for the feedback parts.
