There was a time when I thought it would rule quite hard to have a beach house, like it was the ultimate way to live, a dream toward which any sensible person should aspire. Then Hurricane Irma happened. I got schooled a bit about storm surges then. If you live on the water, like right off the Gulf, or inland but right off some kind of bay, that's where you're likely to bear the brunt of storm surges because the water doesn't have to travel far at all to get whipped up by the hurricane; it could easily reach ten feet or more as a steady wall of H20. Farther inland, at the edge of the first evacuation zone, and all of that water would have a pretty difficult time becoming tsunami-like--lots of land, all kinds of things to impede it.
I'm gonna knock on wood here, not get too cocky, but a storm surge from Milton is unlikely to be an issue here. Stray tornadoes would more likely to be an issue, along with the hurricane proper. Just gonna shelter in place and ride it out.

102To be fair, where are you going to go, it's a bleeding peninsula? Every hotel everywhere is totally booked up the alternative is sleeping in a school gym, but if you do either god knows when you could get BACK to your home. I totally understand the hunker down contingent's lack of legitimate options. Fingers crossed this is exaggerated and will spare everyone more misery.
Re: Extreme Weather Event Thread
103I want a legal requirement that any news outlet that runs a "This guy is sticking it out" piece be required to do a follow-up with each and every holdout when it's all over.
“My wife is worried the house is going to blow away. Every five minutes she all yak, yak, yak, ‘Move those flower pots, get the bird feeder down.'”
Be safe out there, people!

105Wishing you all the best in face of Biden's weather machine.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

106I’m okay. On the whole, it was more windy than wet. And irritating, on account of my family. I hope the power comes back soon so that I can have a hot meal.

Seems like it ended up being a strange kind of storm. Usually for hurricanes, one specific area gets it the worst. But in this case, one area got tornadoes, one area got storm surge, one area got wind, and another area got a shit-ton of rain. Almost all mutually exclusive. I guess because it was from a less common direction (west to east)?

108Beyond the storm itself, where you’re situated plays a role—how close you are to the water, how high you are above sea level, whether the land around your home or hood is flat or sloping. And so on.

109Perfect your sandwich game, bro!DaveA wrote: Thu Oct 10, 2024 1:33 pm I’m okay. On the whole, it was more windy than wet. And irritating, on account of my family. I hope the power comes back soon so that I can have a hot meal.
Best to all of you dealing with the FEMA bullshit and The Fearsome and Mammoth Biden Weather Machine.
Re: Extreme Weather Event Thread
110Easier to perfect your sandwich game if you've got all of the requisite ingredients and they haven't spoiled yet. I was toying with making toast with a magnifying glass if things dragged on for another day.
Power came back about an hour ago.
Last two nights, I slept in pitch-black dark, which was kind of like being in solitary confinement but with a queen-sized bed. My phone battery drained the other night, so I woke up today with no access to the internet. A curious thing is that it felt way later this afternoon than it really was. 1:30 felt like 5:00 pm. So I guess if you want to make time fly/not fly, don't look at your phone or surf the web.
Don't think I've got PTSD, but I've survived an excess of ordeals, this being the latest. Maybe there could be a new term . . . Ordeal Hangovers. A symptom might be not giving a flying fuck, for an indefinite period of time.
Haven't watched any news footage yet. Have only read bits and pieces on news sites, but have gathered that some have had a much tougher time of it. Joe Biden's Weather Machine must be stopped!
Yadda yadda.
