Home stereo/studio question.

I just brought a Schiit headphone amp. It’s going after a Sonos Port with a Rega turntable with pre amp connected. I’m also using with a laptop for recording. At the moment it sounds very flat. My cans are Sennheiser 280 Pros, very neutral monitors. I assume I need an EQ to shape the output and thought of getting more Schiit (that name!).

I’m assuming this would solve the flat sound coming from the turntable, or is the problem the Sennheisers? They are incredibly neutral.

Edit.

It was the Sennheisers… my Sonys sound great.

The old Hammerhead records come to mind. Although Paul had it about dimed, into a fridge cab and played incredibly hard, so that may not be the voice you’re looking for
I think these are the albums that I was thinking of but wasn't sure, but yeah thats the sort of voicing I want to demonstrate. The youtube videos are pretty vanilla, "classic bass tone".

Not to toot my own horn that much but this whole record is an MIJ Fender P-Bass into a V4B into a Mesa 1x15.

No pedals or nothing?

There’s a KWB or Rat here and there at various times but probably 80% of it is just the amp.

I like this thing for metal. That said, i only play metal once in a great while. Most of the time I'm playing strummy indie/shoegaze kind of stuff and I've really found that i much prefer single coils/low gain humbuckers/cleaner amps, etc. Any time I try it with a high gain sound, almost immediately I'm like nah, so boring. i like being able to drive the amp with my right hand and with too much gain it's just too mushy and undynamic.
I actually “scooped the mids” and there was an improvement. I do think I need to check out some more distortion pedals. A have a terrible feeling a Boss HM2 might be the solution 😭
As I mentioned in another thread, Line 6 is selling off NOS pedals and other gear, and the Uber Metal is about fifty bucks shipped. It has a noise gate which is essential, and a versatile mid scoop / sweep.
Picked up one for forty bucks secondhand. Spectacular. Exactly the tone I was after. Great tip.
