Have continued to listen to this more.

Side 1 is very different from the other three sides, and it's not just because 3/5 of side 1 was released ahead of time. It's like almost a separate EP or even band.

If only side 1 was released separately, it would have been a killer EP.

Also: never realized how much Matt Sweeney's singing voice reminds me of Nick Drake.

The songs seem fine, but the publicity rollout is a bit much.

- Their first three shows are in LA, New York, and London -- then an Australian tour

- A short film that's with a title that's kind of goofy and ironic "A Tender Look at the Hard Quartet", but also wants to sell the back story.

- Multiple music videos, one of which is a winking remake of a Rolling Stones video.

They're having some laughs, sure, but someone (the record label, I guess?) is spending real money to establish them as an important band right away based in part on aesthetics and pedigree while acting like they don't really care.

It's the Boygenius marketing plan adjusted for an older and more cynical demographic, plus younger people who have recently discovered Pavement.

All of that said, I'd probably cheerfully listen to the album while running errands or trying to fix things around the house.

I noticed that too...but I expect it's just standard for an album drop from a buzz band these days, and we're just not typically listening to things that are being actively promoted. I guess even nobodies are making limited purple vinyl runs and soforth. I doubt these old farts have any say in all that. Still weird.
