Pulsar's Poseidon EQ Plugin - based on the Trident A console EQ. I've been curious about it, so I tried it out and instantly fell in love with it. The fact that it was on sale for 50% off (probably the lowest it will ever be), I couldn't help myself. Who needs another EQ plugin? Well, everyone. I've never used an original Trident A (too young and broke and talentless), but man what it does on a single track or a mix bus is amazing. I just love that you can play with it and just come up with some interesting results. It feels like it smooths things out a bit and I love that you can move a frequency across the spectrum at 0 db and it affects the other bands around it, good for tightening things up. If you don't know what a musical EQ is, this is the most apparent one that I've tried.

I almost took that bait too until I looked at how many eq plugins I have. I went full sicko about 3 years ago with EQ's. Gotta draw the line. I love the analog obsessions Trident plug so this Pulsar thing looked cool.

Yeah, there's a couple of those Trident A plugin clones out there. I did some research on them before pulling the trigger, I liked the Poseidon the most. I like the way Pulsar designs plugins and adds some modernity to vintage interfaces.

I'd say if you don't have a Trident-style EQ, it's definitely worth adding to your arsenal even if you have a million EQs.

Akg K702. So I have a bunch of expensive headphones from big box music retailer blowouts, which sounds kind of crazy, but for the price of a pedal they all do reveal different things in their own way. I generally don’t wear them for very long at a stretch unless I’m tracking or fiddling with EQ, but I do use them a whole lot.

So I compared the K702 to a Sennheiser HD650 and Neumann NDH20, and yep, they all sound different!

But I was listening to a Van Dyke Parks interview I had going on a decent Bluetooth speaker. The AKGs were notable in how much they revealed the sound of the room he was in, which was a striking contrast - on the speaker, it just sounded like Van Dyke speaking in a non studio environment. .

I usually use Marquee Moon or whatever song I last worked on as a reference, but I’m going to start adding the unaccompanied human voice to that list, just because the differences can seem so stark. Bonus points that it’s not my voice so I don’t have to think about it more than I have to.

I don’t have much to say about the headphones, but they do sound pretty different from the other two, perhaps in between the HD650, which is the only one I would use for regular listening, and the NDH20, which are definitely for reference only. It wasn’t a great time for me to spend money on gear, but at $120 it feels like something I’d be happy to use.

I should probably get a decent headphone amp one day, but I’m happy using monitoring through my Midas board and this little ATI amp I got for very cheap.

No idea if they’re any good, but I believe they’re open back and intended for studio reference, not breezy listening
That's a good deal but I hate that giant basket headphone design. Feels like I'm wearing a space helmet

Edit... I took the bait because I saw that I had $80 in credits so I got the mega cheapozoid discount. I'm going to outer space!
What’d you think?
