I’d much rather have drummers receive credit as songwriters where warranted, but stick twirl acceptance is nice too.

Thought about this for a bit instead of giving both barrels, but this is closer to where I land.

Serve the song. All the other stuff is fine, but the best drummers I know stay in the pocket and are clearly there to play the song at hand.

All the other jazz is just cranking your hog. Which is fine, I guess.

I've always wanted to play in a band with a (great) drummer who did this. You gotta be good though. If you can do this and you're in the Seattle area, gatmyf.

NOT CRAP!

I wouldn't want the drummer in my band doing any of that stuff, but I also don't really play in a capital-R ROCK band. In general, this stuff rules. I particularly like Eric Singer toweling off and neatly folding the hand towel during his solo.

In general, this is not for me. If I see it, I am probably going to have a hard time taking the drummer seriously. Is that lame of me? Probably.

That said:

1.
There's this stunt drummer on YouTube called El Stepario Siberiano who is so obscenely good that I cannot helped by be charmed by his playing. Absolutely ridiculous, over-the-top and exuberant.

2.
If I were any good at stick tricks, I would almost certainly use them, while hating myself. [Shrug. People are weird.]

Still, I'm not sure that me being a grumpy-pants makes it crap. Going with Not Crap.
