I remember seeing this for the first time in my early twenties, a new print. To be honest, I kinda wanted to dislike it, since I was tired of America gangster movies then, and the whole cult of machismo surrounding them. But it turned out to be very good, maybe not the best movie of all time, but good enough to be well rated, yeah. Haven't seen it since, but I did re-watch The Conversation a few months back, and it still holds up.

Megalopolis, though . . . the more I've read about it (not having seen it yet), the less I think I'm gonna like it. Muddled "messterpieces" by auteurs tend to grate as I get older. Have seen too many of them.

Yeah, I saw it this weekend. It is nuts. Reminded me a lot of Cronenberg's The Fly and Requiem For A Dream. It is not subtle and not for the squeamish - teeth are pulled, backs are split open, faces smashed, and lots of needles are used, most in extreme close up. It was hard to watch at times. It gets crazy by the end, one scene had me laughing out loud. It is hard to forget, though, and the performances are solid. If you're ok with all of that, I'd recommend it.
