Am a little behind on things right now and just listened to it for the first time today.

I liked it enough on the first listen to go ahead and buy a copy on vinyl. Am sure I will be listening to it more in the near future.

I can for sure say that it doesn't suck.

I bit of full disclosure first. I was A Cure Fan from about 88-92 during their Imperial Phase. I’ve tried but mostly not enjoyed a note of their output since Wish.

I’ve spent some time with this album over the past couple of weeks and I think it’s definitely their best work since Disintegration. Four absolutely top tier songs, Alone, Warsong, I Can Never Say Goodbye & Endsong. Four good songs.

Lyrically Smith finally got over the youthful existential dread and into end middle age dread.

The more I think about it the more I dislike the “Middle Aged White Guy” assumption. I know plenty of non MAWGs that are loving this album and love the Cure. This reeks a little of essentialism. But I suppose a lot of MAWGs have social media platforms to emote over this album. As a rather typical Gen X music-head I’ve always noticed a strain of nihilism within “our generation” that doesn’t like emotional music and prefers ironic detachment and rye humour. I can do both.

I have a “set of circumstances” going on that really needed this album. It’ll be interesting if the quality will stay this high for the next one or two albums Smith hinted are coming in quick succession.

I don't doubt that, but there's plenty pulling a Blackstar and going gaga when they've heard nary a note of the previous, yet decided it was somehow a pillar of their lives.

And come on lad, things can't reek a little.

Reek away. What is life without a little stink?

Love it. Sounds like it could have been released anytime in the last 30+ years and sounded like the new Cure record, and I mean that as a compliment.

Also no filler, which I don't think they've made an album without at least 1-2 filler songs since...Pornography? Even Disintegration would be improved if you cut out "Lullaby".
