Re: Songs that Make You Cry

My uncle (who died over a year ago) loved old musicals, and one of his very favorite songs was “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” from the Rogers & Hart show Pal Joey. He loved the racy lyrics and would quote it nearly every time we visited.

Sarah Vaughan’s gorgeous ballad version makes me lose my composure every single time.

Brian Eno's "The Big Ship" was already three minutes of pure pathos, but then my dog died from epilepsy in May and one day a couple weeks later while listening to the song I had this vision of her in an afterlife trotting onto a big ship that was going to take her to a place full of other dogs where she could play in water without getting an ear infection and now I can't listen to (or type about) this song without crying. I listened the other day, thinking maybe I was good, being six months out. (E)Nnnnnnope.

oooooof. That's heavy duty, my man. Very sorry.

Eno does that for me now and then, too, particularly "By This River."

An old partner died a few years ago and the day they passed I went for a bike ride and put on Before and After Science. When that song came up I was in a quiet kinda residential neighborhood and this cardinal landed in front of me in the road. I stopped and stared at it for about a minute while this song played. Hit me very hard.
