I had a friend who was crazy enough to buy a pair and swore they sounded amazing.
White van speaker scam
Exactly. Some years ago, I encountered an unusual spin on this sales technique involving door-to-door sales of raw meat. (The pitch was "Oh, your old neighbor used to subscribe and didn't cancel. We can't take this back to the warehouse, so..." I declined. Shockingly, there are apparently people willing to buy such meat out of the back of a car.)

The weirdest was when my friend and I dropped by a bank to hit the ATM and a van dude approached us about some Dali prints he needed to get rid of.

Pretty weird.

from the wikipedia article:
"White van speakers are often partially filled with concrete or rocks to increase their weight and create the illusion of high quality. "

Lucky Peavey didn't go after them for patent infringement over this
"I got to tell you, if I went to a show and an opening band I never heard of lugged a Super Six on stage, I am paying attention." - Owen
