I liked this Alesis “live” video that came out but watched the snl performance of the same song and it wasn’t really happening for me. His guitar tone was more distinct in that you could tell what he was actually playing this time, so the prerecorded stuff whirring around didn’t obfuscate as intended.

The Clapton endorsement didn’t help

Yep this is a whole thing now. @ 1:24 >>

It's actually been a thing for a long time, Brad Laner has been affectionate of piping through 4 tracks for saturation since the early 90's. I'll say there is a nostalgia to the tone of it for me too.

The JHS Color Box is a fancy "HIFI" version of playing guitar direct into a mic preamp, and I think Land Devices has at least 2 other pedals that are simulations of front end preamps getting smashed. Someone out there has another tape recorder front end in a box, I think its an ampex circuit. Can't remember who.

I kinda put all these in the same category of the pedals that had Peavey Bandit preamps in them. Something that I used to be so obsessed with growing into something "better" but now totally dig and definitely get the "Oh yeah... THAT sound!" vibes from. I have a Tascam 308 mixer with a ton of problems and now just thinking about gutting it into pedals or maybe some Tascam 500 series boxes or something. That Tascam 308 EQ in a box alone would be really cool.

I have the scaled down 'Crayon' I'll sell to anyone here for not much. It's a neat effect when it works, but it's got such a narrow usable range that it's more often than not frustrating and tweaky.

I sometimes used to put a cheap ART preamp in front of an amp when going for a kinda Dead Meadow blown out guitar sound and that worked out nicely. I wouldn't overthink this kinda thing.

I have a Color Box but I have only ever used it as a desktop mic pre slash di. I've never actually considered using it with a guitar amp even though that is what they are "for". It's a nice little pre to have around for saturated sounds without needing a plugin or something after.
