Just an update - although not likely a Reaper issue, one user maintains that Protools doesn’t have the same DPC latency issue - I’m in the process of backing everything up so that I can do a fresh reinstall, hopefully without all the useless HP stuff. No Windows or HP hardware diagnostic ever found any issues, and I’ve played with about every setting imaginable and reinstalled or updated all sorts of drivers.
The Reaper settings fixed a lot, but the pops and clicks on playback are still present and, to my mind, inexcusable on a new computer.
I’m thinking of downgrading from Windows 11(which the computer came with) to Windows 10, just to see what happens. Also considering a Mac for my next purchase and am never paying for a Windows laptop again, but that’s a long ways off.
My laptop is supposed to be a gaming laptop which I only got because of the hardware specs for the price (it was on sale), which are unfortunately useless at this point. I’m sure that the problem wasnt always as present, but I went back to school at the same time I got the computer, so I’ve only been recording very late at night on weekends. It’s likely that something snowballed.
Anyone interested in learning more can look up DPC latency. It sucks.
Re: Reaper for assholes
122do you have a method of archiving reaper projects that works well and takes up minimal storage?
i'm sure there are plenty of videos etc that walk through this process, just thought i'd check with some of you who've been using it for a while to see what's been working best for you.
i'm trying to get more organized w/ my digital files and do a better job of backing things up. but i also don't want to spend a ton of time doing this if there are quick and effective methods.
thanks in advance!

Re: Reaper for assholes
123I always make sure to clean the project directory of unused files before archiving. No sense in keeping 30 takes of guitar flubs if you're never going to use them.
File>Clean current project directory...
Then I just .zip or .rar the directory and archive it to the cloud AND a separate physical drive.
Of course, this only works if you have all of your project files in the current project directory. Anything you pulled in from another directory will need to be copied. Like that sample of bird chirps or dogs barking or whatever.

Re: Reaper for assholes
124I really am an asshole - years of Reaper and I never noticed/thought to look for that. Thank you!
Different topic - anyone know how to overlay an audio track with midi items for lining up midi notes? I'll have a synth part where I also record the midi to trigger another patch/sample, sometimes the attack on that patch isn't quite the same so aligning with the audio can help rather than re-playing it. Or for drum hits.
Re: Reaper for assholes
125click on the midi item in the timeline and hit E, or right click, "Open Editor" > "Open Inline Editor" You can edit the midi while you can see the audio envelopes in the time line, the only way to program Vocoders for me!TylerDeadPine wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 9:59 am

126Hell yeah thanks pal. I don’t know if it’s search/AI search getting worse or what but I couldn’t find that in my looking things upKniferide wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 5:52 pmclick on the midi item in the timeline and hit E, or right click, "Open Editor" > "Open Inline Editor" You can edit the midi while you can see the audio envelopes in the time line, the only way to program Vocoders for me!TylerDeadPine wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 9:59 am

Re: Reaper for assholes
127This function is crucial for me when I have a mostly completed backing weighed down by a million botched and aborted takes and tracks that I’m “saving for later.”TylerDeadPine wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 9:59 amI really am an asshole - years of Reaper and I never noticed/thought to look for that. Makes it much easier to get on and wrap up whatever you’re doing, so long as you really are prepared to get rid of it.
Re: Reaper for assholes
128That's exactly it. AnAlOg ReCoRdInG for me as a person clearly being a better process when I look at the insanity of my digital projects - I don't know what kind of childhood possession trauma causes me to want to hoard takes/tracks/everything, but having a 'Commit' button is good.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2025 10:04 amThis function is crucial for me when I have a mostly completed backing weighed down by a million botched and aborted takes and tracks that I’m “saving for later.”TylerDeadPine wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 9:59 amI really am an asshole - years of Reaper and I never noticed/thought to look for that. Re: Reaper for assholes
129It's kinda an understated feature I found but just clicking everything. A friend that does absolutely absurd projects with over 300 tracks using Reaper to control Lighting and Camera changes as well as running all his backing tracks and guitar rig can have like over a hundred tracks of Midi in a project and he had never seen this until I showed him... blew his mind.TylerDeadPine wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 10:09 pmHell yeah thanks pal.
