Tried watching this last night and my friend in a fit of boredom turned it off. Might finish it later.
Watched it also cuz Amy Adams is incredible in everything she does, and is again here. Agree that this film is lackluster. I read on the internet that the book is better but I don't believe it. If the dialogue (both inner and outer) are true to the book, then the book doesn't quite know what it wants to be either.

it's not quite a biopic or a musical. it drops you straight into greenwich village for 3 years and provides the background for who he would become. it's not interested in facts, even though you'll recognize many of the legendary stories that they pull from ("judas," al kooper, meeting woody). they get into his creative process and outlook, which you musicians can relate to.
i was worried that chalamet would run off the rails, but that was resolved almost immediately. it could have easily failed. he had to carry the whole thing.
several people have said it finally gives joan her comeuppance. you get to see her fiery side.
you know i couldn't help scrutinizing the guitar playing and looking for mistakes, and really i only found one little discontinuity.

but yes, it definitely is made for the masses and i know some people can't handle that. that's usually a smart move. this time it works.

Had a New Year's Day Marathon of movies we own on VHS. Watched Troop Beverly Hills (very silly 80s comedy starring Shelly Long, notable as the debut of then-child actor Jenny Lewis--Carla Gugino was also a kid in this), Drop Dead Gorgeous (still insanely funny, and goddamn Brittany Murphy was adorable before she got all, well, Brittany Murphy), and then we watched the reason for me posting this, John Waters' Cecil B Demented. For those unaware, Cecil B Demented is the alias for Stephen Dorff's character, a cinematic terrorist who kidnaps a Hollywood star (a killer Melanie Griffith), and leads a motley crew of young queer and outcast movie freaks, filming guerilla cinema while committing acts of terrorism against movie theaters, megaplexes, anyone propping up the mainstream Hollywood studio system. I had two observations about this movie:

1) it is a WILD baller casting move to give Patty Hearst a bit part in a movie where the lead actress is a kidnapping victim who eventually comes around to sympathizing with her captors

2) While watching Cecil become a folk hero in the movie, with extras saying stuff like, "you know, I would be ok if he took out those people who talk loudly when they enter a movie after it's started," I was feeling some SERIOUS Luigi Mangione parallels. I mean, this is a silly John Waters movie from 2000 about skewering the Hollywood movie system, but if you've seen it, maybe you know what I mean.

My only observation is that Cherish is a keeper...

Also...

Honey winding up a folk hero might play into what you are talking about.

I thought it did a good job at depicting anxiety early on, and the whole perception that the outside world is full of danger and should be avoided.
Watched that film this week and that's exactly where I fall. Glad (???) I saw it, but I would never, ever watch it again. It's my eldest kiddos favorite film I think. Jesus Christ.
