Immediately jumped to mind. We saw them last year in Chicago and he was kinda perfect in every song. Read later that he was under the weather during that show, too.jfv wrote: Wed Jan 29, 2025 7:26 pm I know there’s been a lot of gushing over the new album by The Cure but Robert Smith sounds fucking great at his age.
Re: Singers that maintain a good voice with age
12I actually thought of him after posting. I've come around on their often enjoyable new albums. He can still do his faux-English bellow but he'll shoot into falsetto too. Pretty fearless and he sounds strong.numberthirty wrote: Thu Jan 30, 2025 1:23 am While "Singer..." and "Good Voice..." might be up for debate?
It still wind up scratching my head, and wondering how Pollard still has a voice at all.
Never mind that it has held up as well as it has.

13I don't know about his general performance, but Roger Daltrey did well for 70 here:

14I saw GbV a little over a decade ago, the show was about 3 hours, and at the very end they covered 'Baba O' Reilly'. I didn't think Pollard's voice would be up for that, but damn, he nailed it. I was impressed.numberthirty wrote: Thu Jan 30, 2025 1:23 am

"Whatever happened to that album?"

17David Bowie.
Recently was listening to his No Plan EP, then it went right to Let's Dance-era Bowie. It sounded like the same voice. Yes, he changed from his earlier voice, but you did mention being able to adapt it successfully.

19I came to say the same. I hadn’t been paying much attention to Smith for the past 20 years but not just on the album, on that live Troxy show his voice was as good as it’s ever been. It’s pretty amazing considering he’s 65.jfv wrote: Wed Jan 29, 2025 7:26 pm I know there’s been a lot of gushing over the new album by The Cure but Robert Smith sounds fucking great at his age.
