I saw “Big Star” with Jody Stephens and his talented sidemen last year. It was excellent, a joyous, reverent and competent Big Star cover band.

No qualms about enjoying Buzzcocks in their late 90s/early oughts guise.

"Relevant" is one of those words I can't help but find loaded.

In the context of independent music, or any entity that would appeal to one generation or region of the world but less so another, or maybe even rock music itself at this point, there are countless examples of things that a specific subset of people might care about while the rest of the world more or less doesn't. So a band or artist that could mean everything to like 250 or 1000 or 10000 people won't be part of "the larger conversation" for the rest of humanity unless a song of theirs gets used in a commercial or popular TV show, or they otherwise somehow have a hit.

I think it's all kinda relative, and hinges on context. The value or cultural currency of anything is somewhat in flux, or at least subject to change. Usually that change skews toward obscurity, dissipating "clout," but sometimes the opposite occurs. Good enough things eventually become "timeless."

If someone has a back catalog of cool songs and they feel the urge, why not run them up the flagpole again?

I rather see these acts make shit new records than play the old stuff.

It gets weird when like with King Crimson every ex-member has a cover band playing that stuff. Fripp at least has some new ideas (and I guess there are new songs there as well?)

It seems like every old band in Finland is making a comeback because there were few successful reheating of the old shit. Money grab nostalgia crap.

I saw the Big Star: Third performance a few years ago; think it was pre-Covid. It was quite well done and well received. NC, no WF.

Blue Oyster Cult at the Titus County Fair in like 2011 was a great show.

Couple years ago I saw Manic Street Preachers and Suede play together, was one of the best shows I've seen. Period.

I've also seem some legacy acts that were fucking terrible. Sisters of Mercy and TSOL come to mind immediately.

Christ Sisters blew goats when I saw them in 2006! But I saw Bauhaus a couple of months later and they were just fantastic

I saw Bauhaus in 2022. They were phenomenal, especially Murphy. I saw MBV several years ago, and they were fucking bad.

I didn't see MBV until after the 2 decade "Hiatus" and it was a total mess. My thoughts were "I bet this was always a mess" They MBV that gets the most attention is Loveless and it is a studio curated soundscape more than the sound of a band playing. I'd love to see they just do all of Isn't Anything and I bet that would be a better show.

As far as "legacy" acts, if you can still bring it, bring it.
