As it goes. Their recovery from losing Syd is laudable and Gilmour is a fine legato player, but not having been a teenager in the 70's, I can never buy into someone whose funk hand is as wooden as "Another Brick In The Wall" as a musical genius.

"Effervescent Elephant" is a children's song for sure, and its inclusion over other songs Syd had written at the time still seems kinda perplexing. Now, that said, it's far from as goofy as whatever the fuck Waters is on about with The Wall. The humor, playfulness, occasionally creepy adolescent vibes that crept into the music were not missteps. Hell, those are core tenant to good rock 'n roll! Prog rock's failure to understand that is one of the reasons it's gone the way of the dodo whilst there will always be a trashy band trying to resurrect The Cramps. I bet they could have rocked a very warped version of "See Emily Play."

Wow John, wow, I love "Emily" "Bike" and "Gnome" as just nice little ditties in between psych "freak outs". Early Floyd is really some of the only '60s psychedelic pop I
like if I think on it though .

Are you thinking of a different song? “See Emily Play” (which I love) is definitely psychedelic, but it’s pretty hard for a pop song, and I wouldn’t characterize it as twee.

As for DSOM, not crap, I suppose, though it’s so worn out that I’m likely to change the station when one of its tracks pops up.

Some of Gilmour’s best-known solos are mushy, and the fact that he’s ever Boomer Dad’s favorite guitarist makes me want to dislike him, but (a) a lot of his solos *aren’t* mushy, and the one in “Money” is unfuckwithable; and (b) he was a big and important advocate for the teenaged genius Kate Bush.

Everybody today seems to think that "psych" is just like dark experimental raga grooves....but it was more a 50/50 split of between that, and high-ons goofing on ridiculous shit that seems hilarious only when high. This is why people hate hippies. Syd era PF was in no way unique in that way. The Byrd's "Mister Spaceman?" Get a job you fucking long-hairs. Eight Miles High? Far out man. This is part of why I don't like the Rock-Opera stuff like Tommy and The Wall...it was like the goofy music hall stuff coming back in vogue.

Not sure who John is thinking of but Goose definitely hit some of that in a jam band perspective, and the dumb looking/sounding bass and guitar help with the smooth fusion thing:
