J201 FETs are still readily available and used all the time in pedals. You could also sub something like MPF102 or 2SK30, just watch the pinouts.dfglv wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2025 5:37 pmi've been meaning to get round to something like this for a long time, since i know very little about applied audio electronics or circuit design, and a straightforward preamp/buffer seems like a good place to begin. i landed on don tillman's preamp design (after being really impressed by his notes on guitar pickup characteristics), but i don't quite know where to go next as far as identifying a viable modern substitute for the JFET part, which i don't think is in production anymore.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2302ah terrific, thank you! i'd prematurely given up after being unable to find any at the first two part suppliers i checked (farnell, RS, both UK)Nate Dort wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2025 7:09 pm J201 FETs are still readily available and used all the time in pedals. Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2303I was under the impression that thru-hole J201 were becoming very hard to find, but surface mount versions are still plentiful.
If there are good sources of the thru-hole package J201, please let me know.
I guess that I could also just check mouser and parts express myself![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2305Looks like I have 8 J201s if anyone needs one or two
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2306I used to buy like 100 packs of them on Ebay for around $20.
Edit: yeah, seem to still be a ton on there.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2307There's a few hundred at Mouser: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/In ... teMw%3D%3D
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
2308If you're building a simple buffer I don't think the JFET type really matters at all. Any n-channel should work.
I've made tillman-ish preamps with LND150 dep-FETs and they've sounded aok.

2310Looks like we’re good but yeah if anyone needs a few just PM me and I’ll mail out a couple as a pay it forward gesture.Kniferide wrote: Tue Feb 11, 2025 1:10 pmI used to buy like 100 packs of them on Ebay for around $20.

For that matter, I’d be happy to just be part of a passive component lending group if people here need a few things that can fit in a first class envelope and don’t want the overhead of a digimouser order
