Kiss, and particularly Gene Simmons, are noted for their style-transcending music, DIY ethical stance, manner of business practice, and contempt for the music industry.

The band was also motivated by moral or ethical considerations: for example, Kiss's members regarded pricey admission for rock concerts as tantamount to price gouging a performer's most loyal fans. Kiss's inexpensive target goal of $5 admission was spawned during a conversation on an early tour when the band's members were debating the lowest profitable admission price. Everett True has said that Simmons and Kiss "had a mind-set that believed that any involvement with the system was corrupting and that you should create completely alternative structures outside".
Now I copied that from Wikipedia's article concerning Fugazi, mutatis mutandis, but if Simmons has ever demonstrated one iota of decency I would be disappointed by his pretending to get people to pay thousands to be a roadie. However he's spent the last 50 years delineating the tackiest, lowest common denominator, most money grubbing practices in an industry notorious for them, so this 'news' is just more of the same.

Obviously crap, but I almost admire his lack of scruples. It's like a Scorsese movie.

Paul and Gene really lost the script some time in the 80's, but they kinda were "the people's band" early on. See also: Metallica pre-1991.

I'd imagine his solo tour isn't going too well.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

Eh, it always seemed like a grift to me, the same way Donald Trump was "the people's candidate". (stole that comparison from jeff fox in another thread)

I've seen that quality in bands like Black Oak Arkansas and Twisted Sister though: I think both suck, but they genuinely seem to put on a good show for fans in the sticks.

Gene Simmons as a dude is reprehensible for too many reasons to name.

Gene Simmons as the bass player and sometimes singer of KISS is great on balance, even though he pretty much stopped writing anything but half-assed garbage after Lick It Up.

Also his signature aluminum-neck Kramer axe basses and guitars from the late '70s/early '80s ruled.

As KISS members go, I'm more of a Paul and Ace guy.

Dimebag Darrell, the guitarist of Pantera and Damageplan, was buried in a Kiss Kasket donated by Simmons at Darrell's funeral in 2004.
Apparently the coffin also has EvH original Frankenstein guitar, so if anybody wants to do some graverobbin' this one might have some resale value.
