Conspiracy Theories (with Contrapoints)

1
I watched Natalie Wynn's latest epic on conspiracy theories. It's very much worth your time. It's pretty long but the primary thesis presented is that conspiracy theorists are emotional in the right place in questioning power both hidden and overt, but asking questions that end up distracting from real problems and therefore helping to continue injustice. This isn't really a new idea, but it's articulated in a really incisive and entertaining way.

Personally I think there are conspiracies, they just happen in board rooms and government departments and are mostly hiding in plain sight.

And if you wanted to conspire you would just have to love conspiracy theorists, because they just muddy up the waters and provide nonsensical cover for all the actual nefarious stuff.
In plain sight, yes, but also out of sight. The FISA Court, for example. Conspiracism and civil liberty violations have increased together.

I'm a Contrapoints fan and have a lifelong interest in conspiracy theories and the nutjobs that fall for them, so I'm a mark for this video.

This.

No group of people has been worse at uncovering actual conspiracies than conspiracy theorists. They prattle on for decades about how, any day now, the doors will be blown off the faked moon landing or 9/11 or whatever, and nothing ever happens.

The mainstream press broke the Tuskegee experiment story.
