^I saw this band at Big Ears. I like a few songs from their record, but their live show, like the record, grew tedious after about 30 minutes.
I did smile a lot because their music was so 'anti rock' and I imagined someone walking in, not knowing anything about them, and thinking, "this is the worst shit ever."
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

The Hard Quartet + Sharp Pins - Thalia Hall, Chicago, IL - April 3, 2025

Sharp Pins were a more than competent opening act. Threw off strong Byrds/Kinks/early The Who vibes, which occasionally (gasp) came across as Strokes/Rembrandts. But hey, I'm 100% in favor of (what appeared to be) younger folks playing rock & roll music. Really good rhythm section and the band sounded best when they went full Byrds when the guitarist switched to a 12-string.

The Hard Quartet show was pretty great. I think they played for about 75 minutes, including pretty much everything they've released so far.

This was my first time at Thalia Hall. Nice venue. The sound was great, with one exception. Jim White was super dynamic as always and played with brushes and mallets on a couple of songs. His delicate stuff was completely drowned out and inaudible. I have never attempted to mic a live band, but I can imagine that a drummer like Jim White has to be very difficult to mic in this kind of live setting.

Speaking of... Jim White with the drum theatrics!

I was happy to see Tsunami again. Those outfits made by Jon Langford were pretty neat.
I was less familiar with Ida. But they were absolutely brilliant.
I have to admit being verklempt seeing FM Bob playing bass on "Academy Fight Song."
People near me were losing their shit when the drummer from Ida sang "Starting Over."
After spending the day at the Hands Off rally downtown, this show capped a most uplifting day.
