The head of the Colorado Department of Education has joined PA and IL by responding that we will not conform to the federal directive to remove all DEI policies from our schools.

When I got into her response it seemed a little tepid as she focused on the glaring procedural problems with the federal administration's decree without defending the educational content and free speech issues. When I looked at the federal letter though its focus was more clearly on admissions (the old equal opportunity employer vs affirmative action conversation) and didn't try to define DEI or what other policies would get us in trouble. She rightfully pointed out how it would be irresponsible to sign off on banning undefined content.

Notably, my employer Denver Public Schools made a large push in recent years under the equity banner. They implemented an hours long, required online equity training for all employees. It was something like an "Institutional Racism for Dummies" undergrad course. All of those modules have been scrubbed from the district's professional development site.

To be honest, it was kind of hours of redundant content that my fellow colleagues and I were already pretty aware of. It also didn't have a lot of ideas for how to create the hallowed "anti-racist classroom", just details for anyone who made it to a teaching career without realizing how racism works.

So: in the 1800s you wouldn’t steal because God would smite you, in the 1900s you didn’t steal because the State would punish you, but in the 2000s you can’t steal because the Network won’t let you.40 Either the social network will mob you, or the cryptocurrency network won’t let you steal because you lack the private key, or (eventually) the networked AI will detect you, or all of the above.
