I took all social media off of my phone in preparation for crossing the border back into the USA. I have not reinstalled it.
Last night I finished the NY Times crossword puzzle for the first time in my life.

My little detail: I’m about 4-5 days off Kratom, cold turkey after taking it almost every day since who the fuck knows, maybe 2020? Life has been dragging me down and while Kratom really helped with my chronic pain, it also depleted my dopamine and serotonin while making me complacent. I might still do it at an event if I have to be on my feet for a long time, but right now I have no desire to touch the stuff. I’m also tackling my weight problems, starting with switching to a quasi-Mediterranean diet and just grazing instead of gobbling whole meals. I ate some strawberries last night that literally made me cry, and some cherry tomatoes that are like little balloons of sunlight. I still feel like shit because my body is a 49-car pileup, but as I just said to a friend it’s Shit Rising instead of Shit Sinking.

2738Sounds like a great time. Mexico City is a wonderful city.dontfeartheringo wrote: Tue May 20, 2025 3:05 pm Just returned from a roadie gig in Mexico City. I'd never been but I'd heard enough superlatives to know that it'd be a good idea to bring my sweet wife.
We flew in Thursday and the show was Friday. I booked an extra night at the hotel and we had a day and a half to wander around CDMX.
What an insanely great city. People were incredibly kind and patient with my lackluster Spanish. The food was insane. I lost count of the number of tacos I ate, but we also had the best Ramen I've ever had, and crazy baked goods and coffee.
Flew back to USA on Sunday and wasn't off the plane 20 minutes before two complete strangers had been absolutely shitty to me. One was a CBP agent, so I expected it, and the other was some 20-something kid working at baggage claim who didn't think I got out of his way fast enough. I turned to my wife and she said "Welcome back to the United States."
I've never been treated so poorly by a US gov't official as when entering the US, returning from Mexico. Though all re-entry to the US is a pretty shit experience.
How was the gig, and with whom?

2739Roadie-ing for the B-52s. Always a good time.enframed wrote: Wed May 21, 2025 11:04 amSounds like a great time. The gig was the for the Tecate Emblema 2025. I don't know how many thousands of people were there, but it was nuts. The crew came in and did our thing and then my wife and I had a day and a half to kick around CDMX and chill.
My favorite thing that happened in CDMX was that I went to the big metal/punk flea market that happens every saturday there- El Chopo Tinguis. I saw an incredible band on the little outdoor stage they have there. The band was called Nata. Kind of an Armored Saint vibe. It made me REALLY happy to hear metal in Spanish with a drummer who really shredded.
You can check out Nata on Spotify here:
We bought tickets for the Museum of Memory And Tolerance's Anne Frank exhibit, but due to a mistranslation on my part, ended up just going to the Nazi exhibit. It made me want to come home and spend more time at the range. No joke, it's wild when you see the playbook laid open in plain view, and then see that the current admin is using the SAME exact language to dehumanize anyone they can "other" in the interest of advancing their power. Coming soon: C/NC: .223 vs .308
There are more museums in Mexico City than any other city in the world, except for London. We should have booked more museum visits, but instead I lost count of the number of tacos I ate. Yes, it's as good as you think it would be. But also, there's a really strong baking and coffee with cacao tradition in Central Mexico, so I wrecked many pan dulces and cups of cajete/caramel mocha drinks.
There are still neighborhoods that strike the right balance between affordable/not overrun with foreigners and pleasant AF. I won't list them here, because fuck a search engine. But if you want to talk PRF Compounds in the DF, my DMs are open.

2740Yeah we went to many museums, there are sooo many. If you're only gonna hit one, Soumaya is incredible. Metal Flea Market sounds awesome! I'll have to find that next time. My wife and I went to a goth club that was really fun. Four floors with multiple DJs on each floor. We stayed basically in Chinatown, which was perfect. I also want to book a guide for flea markets: like, "I'm looking for __________, please take me to the flea market that has the most of that."dontfeartheringo wrote: Wed May 21, 2025 3:45 pm

Cafe Villareas for coffee beans, I brought back four kilos in January, just ran out 2 weeks ago...
Next time I wanna take the cablébus across the city for a day.
I'd like to make CDMX a yearly trip. Or move there...not to a 'hood overrun with expats though. I've maybe read too much Paul Bowles.
