Saw local egg punk legends Media Puzzle do a show yesterday - super fun and engaging. Got me thinking of the genre - I’m a big fan of the aesthetic and DIY angle, sure, some of the music can be be pretty forgettable - but above all a sense of tun and irreverence pervades all I’ve listened to - gotta be a good thing…

It’s like the screamers being dragged into the modern age and all its tech opportunities…

How do you like yr egg punk? (If at all)

It’s like an entire genre based on the last two songs of Duty Now…For the Future. Whatever it lacks in originality is usually made up for in energy. I won’t begrudge anyone who plays it, because it almost always sounds fun. Still, it seems funny that a style of music that’s been around for 45+ years is suddenly considered a new genre.

I do like "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" though.

Is there a Donald Fagen-like clip somewhere of Mark Mothersbaugh responding with a “GFY” to someone asking about egg punk?

I'm not satisfied with the eggsplanation of the genre name, but at the same time, the term intuitively made a little sense to my ears even before I learned where it supposedly came from. "Egg punk" evokes the minimalist, unserious, childlike and kitschy vibes that the eggxamples in this video are giving.




I can't give it a full Crap but it does seem like a retrofitted conceptualization of preexisting musicians.

I like quite a few bands that fall into this category that I will never type out or use in conversation.

I did Control-F but I couldn't find any egg.

I think I might like artier egg punk with other things mixed in. Scrambled egg punk, if you will.

The starting point is the Hardcore Devo stuff, I think bands like The Screamers brought more weight to their material than this "sub-genre."

The Coneheads were a fabulous band, all nervy and fast and detached. I think they were the ground zero for a lot of this, by the time they broke up their reputation was already legendary. I really wish I'd gotten the chance to see 'em live. Didn't seen Uranium Club either, but their records are fantastic. I did catch Lumpy and The Dumpers though, who rocked! But they were one foot closer to irony and sneering vocals.

All of those bands were active before the egg/chain punk meme, so they were just punk rock.

Post-meme, Snõõper is a great band, both live and on record. Everything else, ehhhh.

Portland's Cherry Cheeks bring a lot of energy and soul to their live show, one of the guitarists always looks like he's hammered, and I swear there's classic rock leads bubbling under the riffs. I don't think their records are nearly as fun - all of those elements to their sound are downplayed to get closer to "egg punk." It's like two separate bands, and I don't *get* the egg punk thing enough to see why it needs to happen.
