How big are the reels? According to this food dehydrators are superior and there's lots of 10" or 11" options on Amazon for like $30. Plus you can make jerky and shit.
Yeah I just searched on Amazon. I thought they would be more expensive. I'll just get one of those. 6 reels total of 10" reels on aluminum. all Half Inch and one "unused" 1/4" that I might spool onto a bunch of 7" reels I have lying around to use on my old TEAC machines. All Quantegy 456. Some are unopened. The guy that gave me the 8 track asked if I could transfer anything on the reels to a Reaper project for him in exchange.

Funny, I had done a search and came across the Line 6 PowerCab CL 112 and 212, which is pretty much what I was looking for. Its not FRFR, but has optional speaker voicing? I dunno, it's a little confusing. Looking more on it. Seems like it came out only a few months ago.

Reading the manual on it, there is an admission that FRFR isn't a great solution for amp in the room sound as a reasoning for this product.
I'm happy to be wrong!

I just know why I have two powered speaker cabinet prototypes that didn't get approved to release.
It's crazy, because looking into things, there's so many complaints with regards to my question. The more I look into it, I'm actually shocked that the DeVille hasn't become a defacto powered cab for this purpose, being in the lower ballpark cost-wise with powered FRFR cabs and you can fall over one in any guitar store.
Did a little bit more research on this. For the money, it seems like a Fender Champ II 100 would be an ideal candidate for this, and for the price of a used one, almost imperative.

I was just about to post this.

In short, we found that people were using our Catalyst combo amp as power amps for Helix and Other modelers; turning off the cabinet modeling in Helix and plugging into the line in/fx return of the Catalyst. So we used that as a jumping off point to make a powered, guitar specific Cabinet with a few bonus features.

I was hoping to hear you chime in as well. I know I'm not crazy! If I didn't already buy the DeVille, I most likely would have bought the PowerCab CL, they are the same price, and the CL is much lighter.

The other challenging piece of the "powered FRFR" vs. "plugging into the FX return/power amp of a combo" is that these Champions 100 and Peaveys Bandit typically have the cheapest speakers.

In the SS amp thread, Ben Adrian said he tried a Fender Frontman 25 @ the office and found it unlistenable. Not that I'm trying to dispute the claim, or argue that a new speaker would turn an F25 into a black panel VibroChamp. But since we're talking about speaker responses, I do wonder how much better "shitty" SS amps can sound with better speakers. In my limited experience, the difference can be noticeable, but it's not like the only difference between an AC30 and a Valvetronix are the Celestion Blues (obviously).

And from the "what will the market bear" angle, it's hard to see a segment for a 1x or 2x12 with a class D power amp and whatever flagship Jensen/Celestion/Eminence etc. model. Since you'd be locked into those speakers specifically and most people in the "powered cab" marked have some way of deploying multiple IRs...

So cool. Thanks for sharing.

I've often wondered about the Dumble lore but couldn't handle the tone dentists who tell it.
No problem! You can count on the Aussies to come up with budget DIY-solutions for problems you didn't know you had.

I built a couple of little LM386 amps. Isn't it basically what those little amps in cigarette boxes were? Pretty fun little projects.
