his longstanding attempts to...to say 'remain in the closet' is to place too much importance on whether he is gay. it's his attempt to create a totally purpose-built version of himself that is fascinating. pretty much every celebrity has a public face that is different from his/her private face, but his public face is so meticulously crafted and fake in this overt, baroque way--it's always been highly, highly strange to me.
the other weird thing is that the mass media bought it for so long before, almost on a dime, turning on him, seemingly en masse, just now. of course, it doesn't hurt that he is demonstrably going insane:

i think he's a decent actor. he's a movie star. he plays tom cruise. he was good in _magnolia_, he was good in _eyes wide shut_. _born on the 4th of july_, _rain man_, _the color of money_ are all pretty good performances, and i have never seen him be totally bad. and i haaaaated _cocktail_ and _top gun_.
