not so. "indie" doesn't describe a sound, although it can pass for that sometimes. it describes an existence that does not rely upon the money or organizations of the major corporate players of the industry.

so if you say that there's nothing independent about indie music, then you must be thinking of something other than indie music. indie music is by definition independent.

Yeah, but colloquially, people use the term to define a sound culture that is now co-opted (for the most part). Not as an economic or financial condition. The term is tired, and most "independent" rock wouldn't be considered "indie".

If there's a metal band that makes no money, and sounds like Poison, they are technically "indie" but no one would say that.

I'm so excited to see someone else making this point, that is just so obvious... What makes labels like Matador and Sub Pop indie? To me, they're just other companies. Maybe their CEO's wear cool "indie" clothes and skate around on skateboards. I dunno. I duncare. They're not indie. Not when they depend on media conglomerates like MTV and late night talk shows on the big TV networks to push their noise.

Indie died in 1991. RIP. As soon as DGC and Atlantic moved in, it was all over. There were still great indie bands, but they had no hope of making money unless they sounded like Pearl Jam or Nirvana.

"Alternative" is another word that is pure crapola. It's completely meaningless. I mean, I hear that U2 are alternative. So basically, alternative is defined by what it's not -- it's not R&B, metal, hip-hop, fusion... It's a rock-like thing, but the musicians wear neat-o clothes.

SHIT SHIT SHIT! I hate it! Fuck "indie". Fuck "alternative". It's a complete crock of shit and has been for years.

I completely disagree. Indie started as a sound that wasn't mainstream in the least. It has now blossomed into a culture composed of, style of dress, haircuts, belts, attitudes, and a musical equation.

The indie I was referring to is the now conventional label "indie"....the rapture, white stripes, bright eyes, death cab for cutie, etc. So when I said indie is not independent i mean it because independent music is technically something some one creates that doesn't follow a conventional label.

Double-super-fucking-mega-dittos!

This is known as co-optation... It's sweepin' the nation.

Also, in the Polvo thread, no one mentioned "Celebrate the New Dark Age" EP... My fave.

This 80's shit and the "rock revival" are the new new dark age. Though, really, I don't think the last dark age ever really ended.

White Stripes are on Virgin, and I know... I've heard them described as "indie" in the media. Virgin is a fucking super-media conglomerate megalo corporation. In the music media, "indie" now means a sound that independent rock sounded like maybe 10 or so years ago.

There still is independent rock, but I just can't call it that.

I just sigh, shrug, and tell people I listen to funk...

Sounds like the work of Beth Urdang [Agoraphone] to me.

Actually it was not Beth or Dawn at Agoraphone. Sam has had three spots, none of which were done thru Agoraphone... but yeah, I would have guessed the same if I did not know better.
