Having lived in Arizona for awhile now, it makes perfect sense that those guys would come from here. This is a weird state.

Meat Puppets II perfectly captures (if you'll excuse a lift from Marti DiBergi) the sights, sounds and smells of Arizona.

The first record takes awhile to get used to but it's real good as well. Completely off the hook and funny as hell.

A band I have enjoyed through many phases.

Despite the endorsement by Kurt Cobain, I vote:

NoT cRaP!

Yeah, it does.

I don't know about smells, though.

Not crap for the first three records and for being stupendous live the one time I saw them.

I still dig out their records about once a month.

I have a soft spot for Huevos.

Saw them in 1987. They were great.

They were one of the first bands that gave me a seriously smug feeling when I mentioned who my favorite bands were.

You tell the homeroom princess that you like The Meat Puppets (remember, this was a long time ago) and you've defined yourself in a way that makes a high school boy feel OH so different.

Same with the Butthole Surfers. Dropping that name on someone's mom back in 1985 was more offensive than grabbing her butt.

Pups were good back "in the day". II and Up on the Sun have some gorgeous guitarrorism. I also liked moments of Too High to Die.

Not Crappie Bappie.

After putting out their first three they could put out "Paradise Theater" and still not be Crap. In my book, that is saying one hell of a lot.
