On paper I would agree with you but somehow in practice, he makes it work... not many can... I think he does...no waffles.

Yep, on paper I shouldn't like him nearly as much as I do.

But I regularly go through periods when I get songs from "Grace" stuck in my head and absolutely must listen to the album to exorcise the ghosts. It's nearly compulsive.

I also second the notion about checking out the DVD. The live performance is inspiring.

A friend I used to have would play Grace at all times everywhere. In his car, in his house... he would look over his cds for a long time and if he didn't put Grace on it would be some horrible noodly jazz thing, with Grace to follow, in a "right, that's it, I'm going for it" way, the playing of which would invariably be accompanied with standing air-guitar theatrics, foot on coffee table, or seated and extremely animated miming complete with hand gestures to more fully demonstrate the vocal dexterity on display in these songs. Considering that myself and the rest of the company were just as invariably sat around stoned, for at least some of the first year that this went on it was very funny.

Buckley Schmuckley. Crap.

you know what they say about opinions.. when i'm in right mood i can listen to entire records of his and be awe-struck. when i'm not i go "no no no no" as soon as he goes "ayyyyy eeea aaaa ohhh". still, there is no way to deny he was insanely talented.
as for his more rocking songs (like 'eternal life') i have no questions - they're always great.

all of this talking made me put "mystery white boy" for the first time in years. it's a great record, so is dvd.

I went through a huge jeff phase as a teenager, downloading countless bootlegs and buying all the albums. With the gift of hindsight, yes he was a bit of a ham, yet I still listen to jeff's stuff occasionally, unlike say, the smashing pumpkins or radiohead.

Some of the bootleg stuff is very funny, there's a rush parody song about a giant rat king, his version of catnip dream by shonen knife, jeff playing philip glass, taking the piss out of eddie vedder.

not crap, waffle factor 1

Whining sissy crap. I can't believe how many otherwise fine people like this ponce. I was reminded of him because the other day I was telling someone about Karen Dalton, and how her voice makes this indelible imprint on you the moment you hear it, and they said, "oh - like Jeff Buckley?" I stuttered and then said "yes" in my cowed bewilderment.

You are the weirdest motherfuck on this board, and I have no idea where you're coming from.

About Jeff Buckley: The second track off Grace is pretty stunning. Great songwriting and an uncanny vocal performance. His voice
was technically impressive to me without being pompous- never selling out like many other able singers from the time. What confidence!

That being said, I'm conflicted about his gift. At certain times, his music can be way too intrusive, controlling. I really have to be in a Jeff Buckley mood to commit to hearing an entire record of his lately.
