I liked Blue Velvet... I saw Eraserhead about 20 years ago, so I don't know about that one -- I liked the 'Lady in the Radiator' song/scene. So I guess I'll say not crap on the basis of those 2 things. I subscribe to the idea that he is part of a sort of macho, 'Can you handle it? Are you tough enough to live through this movie?' sort of film making. Quite an interesting creep, though.

I celebrate his entire catalog.

I wouldn't ascribe too many societal woes to David Lynch as he's just a dude who makes movies for a living. And very odd movies for the sort of distribution he recieves, which you don't see happening very much. Unless of course The Exorcism of Emily Rose is "weird" or something.

He resuscitated Naomi Watts' career and for that alone he warrants a No Crap.

Lynch has a great sense of humour that other directors who desperately try and recreate, lack. the noisebleed in eraserhead, "my dog barks some" line from Jack Nance, the terrible luck of the hitman in Mulholland drive.

yeah his non linear stuff can be frustrating, I saw mulholland drive again recently and this viewing destroyed my previous perception of what the film was about, I have no idea by the way.

I think the problem with Lynch at the moment is that he has no self censorship, no one else really does what he does and so he gets a pretty free reign of the films he makes, the downside of this of course is that often his films are fucking slow, swans slow if you will, but not in the great way Kubrick did slow.

I am a big fan of Twin Peaks, always excited about his next film and always entertained with where he takes it so Not Crap.

However the love affair is mainly about Angelo Badalamenti, and Dune was awesome except for the thirty year montage within which "everything turned out alright!"
My pretty pony! Why, Zorak, why? You could have had any woman you wanted! But you chose the woman I love almost as much as I love myself! You ruined my life, you ruined her life, and now, I'm going to ruin your life!!!

Totally NOT CRAP for Twin Peaks alone, and then there's everything else. I love everything he's done (actually I could maybe do without 'Dune' but...).

I don't like David Lynch based soley on Wild at Heart. This one has it all:

-(intentionally) bad acting

-looooong side stories that have nothing to do with the plot

-shock-value violence and nudity (including Nic Cage's hairy, beastial form moaning orgasmically in an Elvis accent)

-bad humor

I hate it. And it won the Cannes Film Fest that year, apparently.

Wow. So sad this day.

Wild at Heart is my favorite film ever made. It has remained since the first day I saw it at 15 years old.

Every time I see another film that makes me think, "Wow, this is the best film I've ever seen!" I go back and watch Wild at Heart. It never fails - this gem wins every time.
Having worked in a foreign/indie film rental for YEARS, the offices for Haxan films that made Blair Witch Project were in my living room and my girlfriend worked the kitchen of the independent theater in town for more than 5 years, I can say that I've been OVER exposed to film.

Way too much.

But nothing I've ever seen has replaced my love for this film. Utter brilliance. I would invite anyone who disagrees over for a martini and viewing.

Salut Lynch! And Laura Dern! The whole world's gone crazy and we're on top!
