Listening to Surfer Rosa recently, I was struck by a few things:

-vocal track on 'something against you' constantly feedbacks, sounds like it was run through a guitar amp or the like. how was this effect achieved?

-'wooo....' STOP on 'where is my mind'- was this to loop the vocal or what? it sounds nerdy, but always though it was a nice touch to the song.

I will echo this sentiment, and say welcome. If you've been lurking here, you'll realize that most of us love the chance to crack wise and none of the above was meant as genuinely derisive.

in regard to your question re: vocals. there are a couple of possibilities. the most logical is that of an megaphone/distorted mic type sound where if you make a kissing mouth directly against the microphone, a feedback loop will happen and will result in the desired effect. this can be controlled by the singer.

the secondary mic Black Frank used tha Rotten Tanx was referring to was a Green Bullet, which is normally used for harmonicas. Pretty inexpensive. it usually gives that "CB radio" tone to vocals.



As for the loop thing, dunno.

Oh, I know- figured I'd take a little heat for it. Just curious. Pixies aren't the greatest band, but the recording is still impressive after all this time.
