I'm going for the Medal of Gayness

Why why why why why is it so hard to grasp that people in different places sometimes call the same things by different names?

We don't have big arguments over any of the other differences, like boot vs. trunk, hood vs. bonnet, elevator vs. lift, truck vs. lorry, apartment vs. flat, theater vs. theatre, ---or vs. ---our, majored in vs. read, gaol vs. jail, et cetera ad infinitum. So why is this something to get worried about?

The game with teams of 11 kicking the round ball at each other's goals is correctly called "soccer" in the United States and "football" in Britain. It would be incorrect to refer to this game as "football" in the United States and, as far as I know, incorrect to refer to it as "soccer" in Britain.

The game with teams of 11 carrying, throwing, and even sometimes kicking the oblong ball toward each other's end zones is correctly called "football" in the United States and "American football" in Britain.

If you are American, use American usage; if you are British, use British usage. Since this forum is frequented by both Brits and Yanks, I would suggest that, when the case is ambiguous, the term "football" not be used, in favor of "soccer" or "American football", as the case may be. For example:
I love watching the NFL because I love football. == fine.
Man U. is my favourite football club. == fine.
The best sports are golf and football. == ambiguous: replace with "soccer" or "American football".

Anyway, it's not something to get worked up about!

I think "futbol" is the proper term.

In New Zealand we call Rugby, football. Soccer, Soccer and American Football Grid-Iron.

Can someone tell me why "Tights & Shoulder Pads" is called Grid-Iron?

I was going to paste the Medal of Gayness, but this forum does not respond to my limited key commands, which also deserves the Medal of Gayness because whenever i do something, it should work and when it doesn't i get the Medal of Gayness. i think modern sports as a vehicle of egoism, attitude, materialism, and short term turn around. if that is your bag, then you have much shit and more shit to come to roll in. but i always enjoy most things that don't make it on the tv. so, i feel that while each sport has a window of brilliance, the sheer bulk of liquid shit an observer has to wade through and ultimately sit in does not warrant any understanding why football, american, british, or ____ is worth an argument. besides, i always thought the brazilians had this base covered. remember the movie Alive?

It is not about "football" vs "soccer". It is about using the term "footy", which is quite possibly the gayest thing this side of San Francisco.
