But what if you and someone else are posting at the exact same time, and you DON'T use the quote? Then you run the risk of looking like you responded to someone else, and it's all confusing.

This has happened to me.

i know it seems trivial but...
imagine if you were having a discussion with someone and every time you finished saying something they repeated back to you exactly what you had just said while making little quotation marks with their fingers. imagine this happening over and over with everyone you ever meet until all bonhomie subsides. imagine.

Remember, this is the "internet" where people aren't really "talking". In "real life" when you're actually "talking" face to face with a real "person" there is no need for you to "quote" them everytime you speak as they know you're talking to "them". But in this "internet" it can sometimes be unclear who you're trying to "talk" to, so sometimes quoting someone is necessary, especially when you have "dickheads" like Rysie and Major always piping in with bullshit interruptions.

okay.

so if someone asked you to read a contract and sign the bottom would you write the contract out first again and only then feel like you were allowed to contribute?

whatever...i reckon everyone will at least think about whether it is necessary now when quoting the above post!!!!
