Studio design - feedback request.

First off, a big thanks to folks for the comments and suggestions. It's nice to turn private ideas into public discussion. Well, some private ideas anyway.

your going to have to make the room rather dead to stop flutter. also think about this, to really absorb low frequencies properly, your gonna need atleast 2" of 705 fiberglass, spaced atleast 2" from the wall.

I think I know what you're getting at here, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'flutter'. Could you elaborate a bit?

As for the graphics, the outines were hand drawn, scanned into Photoshop/Illustrator, where text and colors were added. It was less complicated than it sounds.

i'm guessing your amp locations in the diagram are just rough ideas, but in case they're not, you might want to experiment with moving the amps away from walls and corners.

We'll definitely experiment with placement in the room, especially when it comes time to record. Our current backline measures about 20 feet end to end, so even what I have pictured is kind of wishful thinking. It would be nice to have a few more feet to fit everything with a little bit more flexibility, but it'd probably always be nice to have a 'few more feet'. Except when it comes to taping and sanding drywall.

id you look into that already, or are the conduit runs far enough apart that this couldn't possibly be an issue anyway? just something about the parallel run of HV and LV that got me curious...

Excellent point. When digging the trench through the backyard, we tried to keep at least 18 inches of dirt between the two pipes. I'm not certain if it's going to be enough, but we could only dig one path, and it seemed better to try than not try. I'll let you know if we end up with a buzz or not.

And I'm reading through the two things you posted about the acoustics of the shelf space. I will post comments when I have thought this through. Thanks for the pointers.

Thanks for the compliment on our music, too. I've forwarded it to the other fellow in the band.

Your post and the subsequent discussion have made me realize what I suspected: dimmers are unfortunately out of the question.

some suggestions:

photos--people love to look at things
information about cost--i'd be interested to see the budget for this endeavor

You're dead on about the photos. Our digital camera recently bit the dust, and I'm scrounging around to borrow one.

Cost - I agree, but I'm a bit reluctant to get into costs before the final thing is done. There's something funny about publicly discussing the money that you're spending, and that same something doesn't seem so bad when you talk about money that you spent. I could be wrong.

I'll bump this post with new info when there's a substantive update on the site. Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions.
