Is it true that Nebraska is proof that hell is full and the living dead are walking the earth and Iowa is proof that Nebraska is full?

That's FALSE. I'd rather live in Omaha than Des Moines, and I'd rather live in Lincoln than any Iowa collegiate center. Really, these 'coasters views of the midwest are starting to rankle a little.......!

Hairy Mary's caters to a very specific clientele, though the people were nice and friendly when I played there, and my band is pretty far from NuMetal. Perhaps we were lucky?
Well, I hate to say this, but Hairy Mary's was better when it was owned by one of the guys in Slipknot and called the Safari; and there's still some clientele who remember the grand old days of Humpers (2x in 9 months!) and Supersuckers shows. Once in a blue moon there's a show there I go to - for instance, this March 45 Grave are playing.

There's a sign outside of this town that says "Welcome to Des Moines. This is what death is like."
There isn't really. I just made that up.

Iowa City IA, the home of the University of Iowa, is a very nice college town, although
there was one very bad day.
Ames IA, the home of Iowa State University, never appealed to me.
To answer the specific question posed by this thread, Des Moines is a generic American city.
Speaking of Kum-N-Go, which I am generally happy to do, we used to be able to use university vouchers to buy kegs at the Kum-N-Go (on S. Riverside!). Our perception in using such vouchers was that we were getting kegs for free. As we would use these kegs to throw big parties to be attended by pretty young coeds, you can imagine that this voucher system was a very exciting thing to college students.

Gabes is not closing until November 2006, from what I have been told by various people in the know.

Iowa City has two great things going for it to my mind. Gabe's, and the fact you can buy a gyro from some cart outside at 1:30 am. Other than that, there's no real great record stores, it's expensive to live in, and every year it seems to be getting a little more conservative. I don't know what is up with that.
I'm less impressed with Ames, but I still like grabbing a beer at People's now and then. Never been to Grinnell.

My mistake. I thought it was closed already.
Carry on.
