I asked this question at another (geekier) forum, and there was significant favor expressed for Dreamhost. The word was it's a good deal, and they're reliable with good support services. Their basic web hosting package is $8/mo with 20 GB of space and 1 TB of bandwidth.

someone please recommend a webhost. I've used stargate and startlogic in the past. startlogic seemed pretty good, but I didn't really ever develop anything on their servers.

I'm looking for a LAMP host...

I've used Hostmonster (hostmonster.com) for a bunch of stuff. They seem pretty competent, and not too expensive.

I've just had a few friends recommend this place - unlimited domains, massive transfer limits, etc. Pretty cheap for $6.95 per month.

I use File Den. 1GB of storage and 5GB of bandwidth are free. You can pay to get more.

I use Box.net. Free 1 GB of storage, easy upload, stream MP3s.

I think Yahoo, Microsoft or Google will pick this company up soon.

plus, i can manage multiple domains from one server - i'm currently running like five separate sites outta there. it's more expensive, but since i'm doing a lot of heavy lifting (free albums, online stores, etc), i find it very much worth the money.

what type of account do you have there - how much is it monthly? I have several domains spread over two hosting companies - it would be nice to consolidate.
