I agree with both of you guys. I think they should be able to publish whatever cartoon they would like. I do not condone or endorse any stupid and dangerous behaviour they may take, but I understand why they are pissed. They do not do that shit to the Christians/Catholics/Jews in major media outlets, and would not dare. If they did, we'd never hear the fucking end of it.
The drawing si-maro posted above seems kinda "sambo" to me. It's probably because I've honestly never seen "drawings" of the prophet before aside from one children's book and the one above before in my life. It's just not done. It is crazy, but it's also just not done.
you guys are cool.

12I don't doubt for a moment that Muslims who have taken offence to this are genuinely offended, and they have every right to take offence at things. That they are offended doesn't deny the right of the media to act freely.
Then again, that the media does have the right to act freely doesn't mean that it has the right to act irresponsibly, and if these cartoons are gratuitous and designed to offend I wouldn't defend a choice to publish them. But from what I have read and heard (I completely admit that this is second hand information) it would seem that these cartoons are meant to be thought-provoking satire rather than the mindless insulting of someone's beliefs. Humour is always dangerously likely to offend because of its ostensible superficiality, but it has qualities which make it a damn fine medium of criticism.
But anyhows, it seems we've all rougly come to agreement?
Love-in?
Yeah!

I understand that you are presenting arguments FOR muslims,in general, who are angry for the above listed reasons. But I do not understand WHY muslim extremists have the power to have hostages beg for there life on television. Sorry for the emotional angle

15I'm late to the party, but I agree with all of you.
Printing the cartoon = allowable Crap
Muslims getting offended by the cartoon = Understandable Not Crap
Muslims reacting in the way some of them have been = Crap
Hypothetical Christians reacting similarly, were the shoe on the other foot = Crap
Papers bullied into submission = Probably crap
The idea of a free press taking a back seat to religious dogma = Total Crap
Did I sum it up all right?

those two things are not related. European Muslims are complaining and also according to the ariticle, no physical attacks have happened.
however, to answer the second part of the question:
people that are dangerous religious fanatics are ridiculous assholes.
many of them are evil.

Here's one of the other cartoons.
For what it's worth, I think they're pretty racist. It's more the stereotyping of arabs that offends me, more than any religious slight. Ducking behind a free speech defense is pretty weak behaviour. I think the editor should have perhaps shown a bit more responsibility. I imagine he thought Muslims didn't read his paper.
Also they're not funny or satirical--although I defend anyone's right to be be unfunny and racist.
EDIT: to fix image link

Believe whatever the hell you want, but if you try to control the media, arts or politics with your bizarre superstitions then you can get fucked.
Hear fucking hear. Hey primitives: the printing press isn't going away, so your ideology had better strengthen up to withstand it!

Burger King recalls 'sacrilegious' desserts
THE fast-food chain, Burger King, is withdrawing its ice-cream cones after the lid of the dessert offended a Muslim.
The man claimed the design resembled the Arabic inscription for Allah, and branded it sacrilegious, threatening a "jihad".
The chain is being forced to spend thousands of pounds redesigning the lid with backing from The Muslim Council of Britain. It apologised and said: "The design simply represents a spinning ice-cream cone."
Rashad Akhtar, 27...was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: "This is my jihad. How can you say it is a spinning swirl? If you spin it one way to the right you are offending Muslims."
