From what I understand, there are much nicer places in Northern Italy worth visiting.

you seem to have a pretty limited understanding of Northern Italy.
i strongly suggest you go visit a McDonald's next time you're there.

to the thread starter:
Piazza San Marco, the Guggheneim Gallery, the isle of Murano, a ride on a gondola or on a ferry boat , the Biennale of Art, the Armeria, il Ponte dei Sospiri, Rialto, Palazzo Grassi are all places worth visiting.
this should make your day quite busy.

it's a beautiful, haunting town which is better appreciated in spring. avoid summer, if you can, as there are tons of tourists there.

Guilty. I was snowboarding in Austria and only took a day trip to Venice. In that one day, I saw no McDonald's. I did, however, see bridges, canals, and glass. Oh, and birds. Lots and lots of birds.

any part of Northern Italy will be tough shit for you, if you go to Venice and end up summing it as bridges, canals and glass.
so i thought i'd provide a list of places for people of your mindset:

Mc Donald's: San Babila square, Milan
Burger King: San Babila, Milan (on the opposite side of the square, you can use the Duomo as a cardinal point)
McDonald's: Verona, in front of the train station
McDonald's: Padova, in front of the train station

fortunately, the list is endless.

sadly, there is no Starbucks in Italy.

:)

edit:
whoops! i think i misunderstood the content of your post. you were not hironically summing the city as mere bridges, canals and so on. it's just what you had the time to see in that one day.
sorry, really.
i tend to get it wrong sometimes.

Actually, I was summing up the city that way, but I was being silly. Venice was a fascinating place with attractive, well-dressed people that were very patient with me, a hick from Pennsylvania.

I apologize if I offended you, or the good people of your region. If you're ever in Pennsylvania, let me know. I'll take you to The Olive Garden.

One of the saddest movies I've ever seen.

Contains an incredible sex scene. This scene is incredible.
