The interesting thing I've found is how two bands interact with each other when they're first meeting -- during the load in/sound check. Sometimes everything goes really smooth, but other times, things can get incredibly 'high school' -- the thing that really pisses me off is when you make an effort to be nice and people are aloof towards you right out of the gate. I'm trying to be nice over here, break the ice a bit and you've got to avoid eye contact and nod or make a snarky comment like I'm trying to sell something. Fuuuuuck you! The egos, the paranoia, the monumental silent mind games that can go down are staggering. The mask of 'cool' that some people display really gets on my nerves. But sometimes you get to meet some great people. I'll second the kudos for The Poster Children -- really nice band. Back in the old days, Dis-, Zoom, Crain and Versus were all really friendly bands.

silkworm and shellac have provided extraordinary comaraderie to dianogah. man or astroman are great guys. MOST bands we've played with have been really great, generous people. shipping news, hurl, countless others.

blonde redhead are some of the oddest people ever, but not in a bad way. just VERY insular. it's worth it just to see then play up close.

don caballero - fun to tour with, but the potential for insanity is HIGH.

the worst band we ever played with was our first date on our first actual TOUR: bernie's bagels, columbus, OH. the band: rustic bucket. okay guys, but they played THREE fucking SETS, and kept us waiting for them to finish until like 2am. i fell asleep propped against j-harvey's cousin. rustic bucket said that they WOULD tour more, "but except for karl's leg, you know..." we had no idea what they were talking about.

We played a gig years ago supported by a band who's name escapes me (some people from the singularly dreadful Movietone I think...).

They didn't have a guitar or bass amp and wanted to borrow mine and Nat's, which (of course) was absolutely fine by us. These guys commenced their out-of-tune drone-rock and played for a while, then attempted to reach some kind of lame, sub-SY climax whereupon the guitar/vocals guy started smashing their amps with his guitar.

Except they weren't their amps, they were our amps.

After a couple of blows with his guitar, Nat's amp comes crashing down and the guy runs off (literally running) backstage. Nat and I look at each other, share a moment of 'red-mist' fury and give chase.

We find the guy backstage, and he is in foetal position and sobbing like a child.

WTF?

We give-up on any violent plans and return to the stage, where I notice the (unfortunate and innocent) bass player has left his bass. I kick his bass across and off the stage.

I feel about 3 seconds of guilt.

These guys were the worst band I ever played with.

Over the last few years my band got to play with some amazing people. Some of the highlights included;

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
Probably the nicest band I've ever meet. All three of them were so great to hang around with. They even let us splerg on their two-four of beer.

Captured by Robots
I think his name was Jason. If you don't know this group(guy), he's an engineer who programed and designed his whole band out of robots. Pretty amazing the amount of work he puts into all of it.

QandNotU
I think this is the only band I've ever heard of actually telling the promoter to pay the local bands more, even though it meant less for themselves.

On that note, Death from Above for being the only band that was actually taking money away from local bands. Despite selling out the place, I guess a couple of grand wasn't enough to support their entourage of 3.

Despitado
Too bad they broke up so soon. I guess the road was rough for them.

Witness Protection Program
Its nice when you can get drunk and high with another band.

Enon
John and Toko are amazing

Disappointments;

Don Caballero, more specifically Damon. He wasn't necessarly an ass or anything but once he gets a few drinks in him I can see how some of those stories about him might be true. When I asked him about how recording at Electrical was, he didn't have the kindest of words for Mr. Albini.
He lost points in my book.

I'm done my name dropping for now.

Fun Ender played with a band like a year ago. Fun Ender's bass got unplayably fucked up. He had no backup. Fun Ender ask to borrow the other bands bass (they were the only band other band playing with a bass). The other bass player stared at him blankly and ignored him. Fun Ender couldn't play anymore so they stopped.

Apparently, the bass player of the other band is no longer with that band and the remaining members have apologized.
