Ok:
it´s nonsense to say u2 is crab or not crab. more nonsense is to say they are of course crab!
my analysis:
1st phase:
BOY
OCTOBER
the so called "old stuff". listen to this guitars, do they remind you of something? mabye les savy fav or pretty girls make graves? both are good albums with a lot of good songs on: rejoice, i will follow, on and on...
2nd phase:
WAR
UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY
yes, the first hits. sunday bloody sunday, new years day. last one of my all time favs. so what`s wrong with this?
3rd phase:
THE UNFORGETTBALE FIRE
WIDE AWAKE IN AMERICA
ok, not really good. some good songs but a lot of way to cheesy pathos. but crab?
phase 4:
JOSHUA TREE
RATTLE AND HUM
the christian mainstream days. but what about bullet the blue sky? crab and not crab and then of course, rattle and hum is arrogant and silly. four irish discover the roots of all time rock n´roll. ok, that`s crab but i like it anyway...
phase 5:
ACHTUNG BABY
ZOOROPA
POP
what a idea to define itself as arrogant posers and trying so many diffrent ways. ok, not the songwritting like in phase 1, but a lot of good ideas and cool songs!
phase 6:
EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN LEAVE BEHIND or SOMETHING TO WRITE...
i don't even know the albums name and i don't like it either. crab. most of.
resume:
important band. big influence to a lot of bands even you like. don't take everything serious they do or say...
thank you

20i'm not a U2 fan, but here are some observations:
-the edge is a really good guitar player.
-they are a very tight band live.
-after many many years they've managed not to change lineups once.
-they attempt musical reinvention every few albums (some might see as too madonna, but i don't).
-because of these reinventions, they take musical risks, i.e. alienating older fans.
-being rich with famous, they could just remake the same album over and over again, but they do not.
-they go out of their way to find cool young acts to open their shows.
-relating to the above statment, they actually listen to new music. few famous older musicians seem to do this.
