I'm sorry for laughing at your misfortune, but that was kinda comedic...

Yep, shitty fucking screw!

How do you think it sounds anyway?

yeah, I know, right? like, i beat you on the first part, dirty screw. but you fucking slaughtered my ass in put-back-together stage.

My verdicts are:
HEY! I will actually buy an SM57 or two now! (The one I modded was my friend's. I asked him first, he was like "meh") I like how they sound on snare and toms a LOT more than the version with the output transformer.

Is like your friend who is girl but also kindof ugly and lets you fuck her goes to the exercisiste and gets all pretty mamasita all of sudden, but hey, still is kindof ugly girl who you get to fuck. No complaints to begin with, but HEY! I am getting used to getting used to these!

Salut, Transformerless SM57!
Salut, kindof ugly girl you fuck!

I think I am to calling these Shure M57, no S, just Modded.

Salut, M57! (is look cooler too, non?)

It would be interesting to see someone mod this mic with a different transformer.

re: broken screws -

i haven't read the article, maybe it mentions this. the screws that hold in the XLR connector on the 57/58/etc are reverse threaded. counterclockwise to tighten, clockwise to loosen. is it possible you just overtightened it and yanked the connector out, thereby breaking the screw?

I didn't have any problems with the screws.

I did some A/B tests on a marshall cab, snare and toms...the mod is significantly better than a regular 57, but still doesn't hold any competition to the Beyer 201 or a 421.

I'd say it's a good idea if you can't afford anything other than an sm57.

I'd be interested in seeing someone put a better transformer in there too. It seems to me that the low impedance of the modded 57 would make it really sensitive to preamp selection, no?
