i regularly release things on cdr.

I consider a way to package them in a (semi) unique way and then sell them for a reasonable price.

It's a way of getting my music out to people in a cost effective and productive way.

NOT CRAP.

i put collections of improv stuff out on printed CDR in a simple sleeve for little money, for the main reason that because it's improv there is an abundance of material and not worth getting glass masters of everything.

its cost effective mainly, I can make a CDR look ok, get some decent quailty sleeves printed, and do short runs of 30-50 copies of whatever i like (see any old shit) and i can flog them for £3 at gigs and spend the money on beer.

viva la CDR.

i find cd-r releases frustrating logistically to put out (making the artwork, having enough copies), so i want to avoid it. but on the other hand cd pressing is expensive and i always have too many copies. i need a happy medium.

I agree, the price should reflect it being a CDR. It should remain cheap... everyone knows it is inexpensive to burn your own CDRs... plus you didn't have to pay for a whole big pressing up front so you are not out a bunch of money. Price them accordingly.

so what about the fugazi live series that are 10 bucks each post paid, the same price as the regularly manufactured, mastered, artworked CD's that Dischord puts out.

are those worth the money? it seems shystey to me.

the fugazi thing is kinda weird, but if they were priced cheaply, thousands of people would order every show. it'd suck to wake up one day and know you had to burn 4,000 unique cdrs..

Most of the Fugazi live series are 2 70 something minute CDR's completely full of music for 10 bucks, with pretty nice packaging and artwork.
Well worth the money in my opinion.

When we started our band, we decided that our first release would be on a "real" CD. At the time (three years ago) nobody else in town was doing this. I think it was borne out of a desire to show that we had our shit together, that we actually spent time and money writing and recording our songs, and we didn't want our record to look like complete dogshit. Not that this is always the case, but for fuck's sake have you seen or heard some of the crap that gets "released" on CD-Rs?

It was more of an aesthtic decision than anything else for us. I've seen some pretty nice CD-R packages, but I've always thought of CD-Rs as more or less "disposable."

CD-R releases are NOT CRAP, but for the love of Christ, show some fucking pride in your craft.
