I have a couple of these and love them for overheads, room micing and even the occasional vocal (in a pinch).

The APEX 460 is a surprisingly nice mic. I picked one up a while ago due to all the buzz about them in our local "Long and McQuade" shop. They booked a Neve equipped studio and brought about 15 different mics ranging from Sm58's to Neumann's (I think that the U-47 was in there with the Blue baby bottle, AKG 414, Studio Projects C1 etc...) Anyways... They had the Apex in there too. They recorded a male singer, female singer and an acoustic guitar doing the same thing with each mic with the same placement of the mics. The Apex was EXTREMELY nice sounding... Even next to the really expensive mics! Anyways, what I'm getting at is that for a Chinese made tube mic that goes for $250 Canadian, it's versatile and sounds great for a budget minded dude such as myself. Also... I'm using an Allen and Heath "mixwizard" board and I'm pretty stoked on it, but if you've got a 1604 Mackie, I'd save up for a better upgrade. Something like the four channel HHB tube thingy... I've used them and they're pretty nice. I've also heard some nice things about the FMR real nice preamp, but I've no experience with them personally.

the pro37 is pretty cool, but i find it to be a tad harsh in the upper mids.

I think the oktava mk-012 is a little more forgiving (natural) in that freq region. Another nice thing is that they will take one hell of a beating. They also have interchangeable capsules (card, omni, hyper card, and a LOMO LD capsule). Truly a wonder on toms.

I was wondering what your opinions were on the Lomo heads for the mk012?

They look quite interesting and I was considering using one to donate a capsule for a valve mic.

i havemt used the lomo capsule on the mk-012s yet. Ive been wanting to get a pair for a while... The LOMO M3 and M1 capsules (same capsule, different look) are supposed to be the same diaphragm (built in the same factory) that went into the LOMO valve mics such as the 19A-19 and 19A-9. I imagine that they sound pretty nice.

I'd be interested in looking into making a 19A*, etc.

You can pick up these capsules (some with the MK012 body) for quite cheap.

Apparently they are really designed for a bias voltage of around 80V (like Neumann, etc,) so the MK012 actually only reaches half this value at around 40V. This will lose say 6dB of sensitivity (and increase noise floor relatively).

Having heard very positive reviews of these capsules running on the MK012 body, I'd really like to hear one in a valve setup.

I'll maybe get the MK012 + Lomo capsule and see what it's like first.

I got the Pro37 (not the "R") from them recently. I'm currently using it in a session (with Covocation Of...) on guitar next to an md421. It's bright but still very full and well balanced. We also tried it next to an SM57. No contest. The 57 sounds severly constricted and compressed in comparison.

I'm also looking for something a little bighter than my Crown CM700s for drum overheads, but I think the Pro37 may be a little too bright for my tastes.

That's a good question. Comparing the datasheets for each, it doesn't appear that there is any difference. Maybe you should ask AT.

yeah, looks like I may have to. I figured it would be faster here though. I'll post the answer, when/if I get it.
