That is EXACTLY the technique these guys are using.

So...the general consensus is to NOT use my best vocal mic and use the crappiest mic in my collection.

Place over singer's head and microphone. Any NFC bucket will do.

In a pinch, try patching his vocals through a guitar pedal. Sometimes I put a vocal send through a Boss DS-1, stick it on another channel and bring it up under the dry vocals, to give it a little more bite. This is more of a subtle thing, but I don't see why you couldn't go over the top with it if you wanted.
